Preserve More of Your Natural Smile with Composite Fillings

Filed under: General Dentistry — Tags: composite fillings, Daniel Fox, Dr. Daniel S. Fox, Dr. Fox, Farmington, Livonia, Livonia Dental Group, Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Redford, tooth-colored fillings, Westland — admin @ 5:30 pm

Have you been reluctant to get fillings because of how they’ll make your smile look? At Livonia Dental Group, you don’t have to worry about marring your smile with amalgam fillings.  With composite fillings, also known as tooth-colored fillings or white fillings, Dr. Fox and our team can give your smile the care it needs without compromising its appearance.

One of the great benefits of composite fillings is that they blend in seamlessly with your natural tooth color, making it virtually impossible to tell that you’ve even had fillings. Only you and Dr. Fox will ever have to know.

But composite fillings don’t just have a cosmetic benefit—they’re a better restorative choice overall. With composite fillings, Dr. Fox can remove less of your healthy tooth structure, leaving more of your natural smile intact. Plus, composite fillings bond with your tooth, supporting its natural structure, instead of just acting as a barrier for decay. And what’s more, because composite fillings won’t change shape or respond to temperature changes, you can look forward to enjoying your restored smile for years to come.

Want to learn more about composite fillings and how they can help you? Call Livonia Dental Group today. Dr. Fox would be happy to consult with you about fillings or any of our other services.

Livonia Dental Group Wants To Remind You—Oral Health and Heart Health Are Deeply Connected

Filed under: General Dentistry — Tags: Canton, Dr. Fox, Farmington, heart health, Livonia Dental Group, Livonia general dentistry, Northville, Novi, overall health, Plymouth, Redford, Romulus, Taylor, Valentine's Day, Wayne, Westland — admin @ 9:47 pm

If February is known for anything, it’s known for Valentine’s Day and, by extension, heart decorations. As cute as these heart decorations can be, though, the heart and heart health are important. Recent studies have even shown that there’s a significant link between one’s heart health and one’s oral health.

What kind of link?

That’s not entirely clear, but what is clear is that gum disease can create pockets between the teeth and gums. These pockets then act like doorways, allowing bacteria and plaque access to your bloodstream and, as a result, the rest of the body, including that most important of organs—the heart.

So how can you give yourself added protection from heart disease? Aside from exercising, eating right, and visiting your doctor an annual physical, make sure that you’re also brushing and flossing every day, and that you’re seeing Dr. Fox or one of our other doctors at Livonia Dental Group twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings.

If you’re ready to schedule a February visit with us, give our Livonia dental office a call today. We want to help all patients from Redford, Canton, Wayne, Farmington, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Westland, Romulus, Taylor, and surrounding areas have healthy smiles and healthy bodies.

Stop Bruxism in Its Tracks with a Nightguard from Livonia Dental Group

Filed under: General Dentistry,Uncategorized — Tags: bruxism, Canton, Daniel S. Fox, Dr. Fox, Farmington, Livonia Dental Group, Livonia dental office, nightguard, Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Redford, Romulus, Taylor, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, TMD, Wayne, Westland — admin @ 2:11 pm

There are healthy and unhealthy responses to stress. One of the worst for your oral health is bruxism. Also known as teeth grinding, bruxism is often an unconscious reaction, and for many patients, it causes the most trouble at night during sleep.

Symptoms of bruxism include:

  • Jaw pain
  • Headache
  • Earache
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Depression
  • Insomnia

But as serious as these symptoms are, what’s most pressing about bruxism is that it can cause extensive damage to teeth and, if left untreated, can lead to temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD).

Treatment is possible, though, with a nightguard from Livonia Dental Group. A nightguard is an orthotic appliance that’s custom made to fit your smile and prevent your teeth from grinding together while you sleep. And what’s more, Dr. Fox can also talk with your about effective stress and anxiety management techniques that will help you deal with stress more effectively.

Don’t let bruxism destroy your smile. Call Livonia Dental Group to schedule an appointment with Dr. Fox. We serve patients from Redford, Canton, Wayne, Farmington, and Novi and Northville, in addition to patients from Plymouth, Westland, Romulus, Taylor, and beyond.

Kick Off 2012 with a Whiter Smile from Livonia Dental Group

Filed under: Cosmetic Dentistry — Tags: Detroit cosmetic dentist, Detroit dentist, Livonia cosmetic dentist, Livonia Dental Group, Livonia teeth whitening — admin @ 5:06 pm

In addition to being the start of a new year, January is also a time for ushering in a new you.

One way you can do this is with a whiter smile from Livonia Dental Group. Using Zoom! Whitening, Dr. Fox and the rest of our Livonia team can help patients cut through embarrassing stains to reveal a dazzling smile. And with in-office and at-home teeth whitening options to choose from, we have something to meet every patient’s needs.

Teeth Whitening Options from Livonia Dental Group

In-office teeth whitening is a quick and easy way to unveil a new smile. After just one appointment at Dr. Fox’s Livonia dental office, patients can have teeth that are close to 10 shades brighter than they were before coming in.

But some may prefer whitening their teeth in the comfort of their own home. For these patients, Livonia Dental Group offers take-home trays for at-home whitening.

Like in-office whitening, at-home whitening delivers professional results that can truly make a difference in a patient’s appearance and self-esteem. The primary difference is that, with at-home whitening, it takes between one to two weeks to see results.

For best results, patients may want to consider combining in-office teeth whitening with occasional at-home touch-ups. By touching up your smile in the weeks and months to come, you can keep on enjoying your new smile all throughout 2012.

Want to Learn More?

Call Livonia Dental Group today if you live in Redford, Farmington, Northville, or a surrounding city. Dr. Fox would be happy to meet with you and discuss any questions you might have, in addition to helping you set up a plan for your smile.

Dental Implants vs. Conventional Bridgework

Filed under: bridges, dental implants,Restorative Dentistry — Tags: bridges, crown and bridge, dental implants, dental implants vs. bridges, dental implants vs. crown and bridge, livonia bridgework, Livonia Dental, livonia dental implants — admin @ 8:37 pm

Of course there is more than one way to replace a missing tooth, or even teeth. But we must be clear that not all methods are created equal. Dentures and partials are used when the majority of a patient’s teeth are missing or need to be replaced. Crown and bridgework is usually performed when one or a few teeth are missing. Dental implants replace individual teeth and are often used to stabilize dentures, partials, and bridges—demonstrating the superiority of implantation over the alternatives.

The Dental Implant Difference

There are a number of factors to consider when weighing the pros and cons of dental implants versus traditional crown and bridgework. Below we’re going to outline a few of the more notable concerns. (more…)

Sweeten Cavity Prevention with Xylitol

Filed under: cavity prevention,Dry Mouth,General Dentistry,Uncategorized — Tags: cavity prevention, decay prevention, Dr. Fox, Livonia preventive dentistry, preventive dentistry, Spry, sugar alternative, xylitol — admin @ 7:59 pm

There are currently more artificial and natural alternative sweeteners than I can even begin to keep track of. There is, however, only one that not only sweetens naturally (and deliciously) but is also good for your teeth. Xylitol, in fact, goes so far as to protect teeth from big, bad, enamel-destroying decay.

Xylitol is a 100 percent natural, nonfermentable sugar alcohol found in the fibers of many fruits, and it has been given the safest rating for food additives by the World Health Organization. Not only is it safe and healthy… it also tastes great! (more…)

Living With Dry Mouth Caused by Medication and Cancer Treatment

Filed under: Dry Mouth,General Dentistry — Tags: cancer treatment, dry mouth, fluoride treatment, medication side effects, xerostomia, xylitol — admin @ 10:21 pm

Dry mouth (xerostomia) is an unpleasant, frustrating side effect of thousands of medications and most cancer treatments, as well as many diseases. Unfortunately, dry mouth is not as simple or as harmless as it sounds. Dry mouth can have a significant impact on everything from speech to taste to digestion, and it affects 20-25% of adults.

Salivary Support

Saliva is vital to the health of your teeth and gums by working as a natural “mouth wash” of sorts. The pH in your saliva neutralizes acids created by plaque bacteria and prevents demineralization of your teeth. It also aids in chewing, swallowing, speech, and digestion. Saliva greatly affects the way foods and beverages taste, as well; and because it protects your teeth from plaque bacteria and acid, it also helps keep your smile whiter and less susceptible to decay.
